Skills to Learn

New Bridge’s Skills to Learn group enjoyed a trip to Holy Island which linked to a recent history project on Anglo-Saxon England, alongside an ever-expanding list of English Heritage sites that they have visited recently.

The learners discovered that the Priory was one of the most important centres of early Christianity in Anglo-Saxon England and that it is still a place of pilgrimage today. We also learnt that St Cuthbert was originally buried there as he was the most celebrated of the priory’s holy men but that in 1104 his remains were moved and enshrined in Durham Cathedral, where they still rest today. Due to our findings next week, we are off to Durham Cathedral to expand our knowledge further on this period in history.
