Year 7 – Science

Year 7 has been looking at separating techniques, we began by looking at filtration, evaporation, distillation and finally chromatography. We placed four different pen inks onto filter paper and placed them in a beaker.

The water then absorbed through the paper and separated the inks into the colours used to create them. The learners discussed potential uses for these and one we came up with was for restoring old paintings, this separation technique can be used to identify colours used in the creation of paint colours. Another use is in crime scenes for forensic testing. Great colourful work year 7!
